Vidalia,
Mr. Harry L. Brown, Jr., age 79, of Vidalia, died Friday, December 21, 2018, in Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, after an extended illness.
He was a native of Lyons and lived in Toombs County all of his life. He was a 1957 graduate of Lyons High School and attended South Georgia College in Douglas where he played football and baseball under the now legendary, Bobby Bowden. Early in his life, Harry worked in the family business in Lyons, Brown’s Department Store. He was the owner of D&D Paper Company and D&D Pinestraw/ D&D Farms. He served on the Lyons City Council.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons and the John Durst Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by a son, Dehn Brown; parents, Harry Lawson Brown, Sr. and Mae Nobles Brown; and four sisters, Mae Tatum, Sarah Middlebrook, Lola Vaughn, and Corkey McRae.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Deborah Kilgore Brown; one daughter, Dana Brown Lawrence and granddaughter, Rebecca Shay Lawrence, all of Vidalia; two step-children, Lisa Wessinger Matheson and husband Mark of Watkinsville, and Wesley Peterson and wife Zeny of Guyton; four step-grandchildren, Lauren, John Casey, Samantha, and Sophia; one sister, Dot Alexander and husband Dickie of Lyons; one brother-in-law, Curtis Vaughn of Lyons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, December 23rd at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Lyons with Reverend Joe Phillips and Reverend Tom Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Lyons City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 until 7:00.
