"Ebbie" Hughes Obituary

McGregor Community,

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth “Ebbie” O’Neal Hughes, age 77, of the  McGregor Community, died Monday, July 16, 2018, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness.  She was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, and was a 1959 graduate of Montgomery County High School.  She began her banking career as a teller at Mt. Vernon Bank, and retired after many years as Vice-President.  She retired again from Brewton-Parker College in the Registrar’s Office, and also served as Chief Registrar for several years for Montgomery County.  She was a member of the McGregor Presbyterian Church since 1953, was a member of the Mt. Vernon Garden Club and the Vidalia/Lyons Moose Lodge.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert “Jim A.” Hughes; parents, Henry Everette O’Neal and Mary Lizzie Woods O’Neal; one sister, Betty O’Neal Burke; and two brothers, H.E. O’Neal and Lamar O’Neal.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by two sisters, Carolyn Gertrude O’Neal Sears and husband Harvey of McGregor, and Annette “Ann” O’Neal Harrell of Vidalia; one brother, Homer Lee O’Neal and wife Nancy of Ailey; two sisters-in-law, Toby O’Neal of McGregor, and Sue O’Neal of Ailey; one brother-in-law, Tommy Burke of McGregor; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 18th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne McDaniel officiating.  Burial will follow in the McCrimmon Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00.
