Dr. Robert H. DeJarnette, Jr. passed away Sunday, August 20, 2017 after an extended illness.  Dr. DeJarnette was a 1957 graduate of Vidalia High School and a 1965 graduate of Emory University School of Medicine.  He was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War.  After his service and residency, he joined his father in the practice of medicine in Vidalia and continued after his father’s death in 1973, until his retirement in December of 2000.  He was appointed by the State of Georgia as a Medical Examiner in 1972, working primarily in the Toombs County area.  As his father before him, he served as Medical Director at Bethany Home for Ladies in Vidalia from 1973-2000.  He served as Medical Examiner at Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant from 1972-2000, was appointed to the Georgia State Board for Prison Health from 1975-1995 and served on the operating board of John M. Meadows Memorial Hospital until appointment to the Toombs County Hospital Authority.  He directed the Family Planning Clinic for Toombs County, sat on the Toombs County Board of Health and was a member of the board of directors of Darby Bank & Trust Co. for over 25 years.  He served as a Trustee and was ordained as a Deacon at Vidalia Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and was an honorary Georgia State Trooper.  He was affectionately known to his patients and the local medical community as “Dr. Bob.”

Dr. DeJarnette was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. R. Henry DeJarnette, Sr. and Mary Gates DeJarnette.  He is survived by his daughter, Helen D. Payne (John) and his son Robert H. DeJarnette, III (Roseann), grandchildren, Will Payne (Jennifer), Sarah P. Maddox (Josh), Hank DeJarnette and Martin DeJarnette as well as great-grandson Wyatt Payne.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 22nd at Vidalia Presbyterian Church at 3:00pm with the Reverend Jay Warthen and the Reverend Ron Gilreath officiating.  Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the church.
