Coach Charles "Chunk” Reid Obituary

Coach Charles “Chunk” Reid passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2019 surrounded by close family and friends.  Chunk Reid, a great coach but an even better husband, father, and Poppy, was 75 years old.  He lived life to the fullest and his legacy will forever impact the lives of the Vidalia community through his family, his friends, his athletes, and the Vidalia High School athletic programs.

Coach Reid was born October 13, 1943 in Lyons, Georgia to Maynard Lloyd and Willie Rema Reid.  He was one of four children, including his sisters, the late Francis Wilkes and the late Betty Colson as well as his brother, Maynard Lloyd Reid Jr.  He graduated from Vidalia High School in 1961 and from Georgia Southern College in 1967.  On December 18 of 1966, he married Barbara Kennedy Reid, his loving wife of 52 years.

Coach Reid had an extraordinary career as an educator, coach, and athletic director. Throughout his career, he impacted the lives of many students in the community through teaching and coaching. Coach Reid coached football, softball, baseball, and girls basketball.  Coach Reid coached the Indians for 49 years and is celebrated as the state of Georgia’s all-time winningest girl’s high school basketball coach.  During his tenure, he motivated his girls basketball teams to 881 wins, 11 region titles, 33 occasions in the state playoffs, and a state championship runner-up in 2010. Coach Reid served as Vidalia High School Athletic Director for 22 years, where he had the privilege of watching his beloved Indians win 16 state champions and 15 Region All-Activities Championships.  Coach Reid was named 2001 Coach of the Year by the National Federation Coaches Association.  He was named the Georgia Athletic Director of the Year in 2003. He was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018. Coach Reid lived his life to exemplify “once an Indian, always an Indian”.

Chunks greatest legacy is not what he left on the court but what he shared with his family and friends.  He was the kindest, most giving, most patient husband, father, Poppy, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Kennedy Reid of Vidalia, Ga, his daughter, Amber Reid of Vidalia, Ga, his son and daughter in law, Ivy and Sandy Reid of Vidalia Ga, his two granddaughters, Logan and Addyson Reid of Vidalia, Ga, along with several nieces and great nieces and nephews, and a large number of special friends.

The funeral service and a Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 31st, at 10:30 a.m. in the Vidalia Comprehensive High School Gymnasium with Reverend Billy Folsom Reverend Jim Smith officiating and John Sharpe officiating.  Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Jose Caraballo officiating.
