Lyons,
Mrs. Betty Mathis, age 81, of the Johnson Corner Community, died Friday, June 22, 2018, at the lake home on Lake Sinclair, after an extended illness. She was a native of Telfair County and grew up in Milan. After graduating in 1953 from Workmore High School in Milan, she made her home Macon where she met and married Thurman Mathis. In 1965, she and her family moved to Toombs County, and continued to live there until 2015, when they moved to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida for a couple of years. In 2017, they moved to Lake Sinclair, Sparta. She was an honor graduate from Brewton-Parker College, and retired in 1996 from Appling County Department of Family and Children Services. She was a member of the Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Johnson Corner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Governor Wells and Olif Hulett Wells; four brothers, Royal Lee Wells, John B. Wells, W.A. Wells, and Edwin Wells; and two sisters, Dorothy Carpenter and Estelle DuBose.
Mrs. Mathis is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Thurman Mathis of Lake Sinclair; two sons, Leon Mathis and wife Dennise of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Terry Mathis and wife Jennifer of Ridgeland, South Carolina; one daughter, Kim Mathis Barnes of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; two grandchildren, Matt Mathis and Amanda Mathis; one brother, Ira Wells; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 24th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Black officiating. Burial will follow in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.
