Mr. Joseph Edward “Joe” Buckbee, Jr., age 76, of the Old Elza Community, Lyons, died Saturday, February 6, 2016, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after an extended illness.  He was born in Austin, Texas, grew up in Kermit, Texas, and was a 1956 graduate of Kermit High School.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Science from the University of Texas at Austin.  He retired after twenty-nine years from the State of Texas as a draftsman with the Water Commission, and moved to Toombs County in 1995.  He was a member and Deacon of the Providence Missionary Baptist Church, where he previously taught Sunday school, and was the former Chairman of the cemetery committee.  He served our country in the Army National Guard for twenty years.  He was an avid fisherman, and a collector of arrowheads and bricks.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Edward Buckbee, Sr. and Martha Ophelia Morgan Buckbee.

Mr. Buckbee is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Brenda Griner Buckbee of the Elza Community; two daughters, Antonia Buckbee Moderie and husband Mark of Polson, Montana and Katherine Buckbee Dorsett and husband Tom of Austin, Texas; one sister, Tommie Lee of Stephenville, Texas; one brother, Don and wife AltaTaylor of DeLeon, Texas; four grandchildren, J.E.B., Jake, Ella, and Elizabeth; and two nieces, Donna and Debra.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 10th at 3:00 p.m. in the Providence Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Ferrell, Wayne Kirkley, and Jones Hart officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
