Mrs. Jackie A. Smith, age, 86, of Lyons, died Saturday, April 18, 2015 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia.  She was a native of Oak Park, and was a 1944 graduate of Oak Park High School.  She earned an Associate Degree from Georgia Teacher’s College in Statesboro, and later a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee.  She taught school in several states, and also worked with the South Carolina Department of Social Services.  She moved to Lyons in 1999, and soon became a member of the East Gordon Street Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir and Women’s Missionaries Union.  She was an avid golfer, and once had a hole-in-one.  She was preceded in death by a son, James Edward “Jimmy” Smith, and was the last surviving member of the Armstrong Family.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years, Dan Smith of Lyons; four children, Melonda Ali Steen of Bluffton, South Carolina, Colonel Michael Smith (U.S. Army Retired) and wife Bonnie of Goshen, Connecticut,  Danny Smith and wife Jeanne of Metter, and Phil Smith and wife Sharon of Hartwell, Georgia; twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 21st at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Dane Glisson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Lyons City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Gordon Street Baptist Church, P.O. Box 131, Lyons GA 30436.
