Mrs. Gertrude “Toots” Brittain Schaible peacefully passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016, at the Bethany Assisted Living facility after an illness of several months.  She was born December 17, 1925 at Shelter Island, NY and was living independently at the age of 90.  She was preceded in death by her husband, LT. Col. U.S.A.F. (Ret) Daniel F. Schaible of Shelter Island, NY in 1969, her parents, Harley and Hilda Brittain, brother Buddy Brittain all of  Shelter Island, NY, and son-in-law, Hugh Charles Rustin of Santa Claus, GA.

‘Toots” Schiable retired from the N.E. School District of San Antonio, TX, and moved to Vidalia, GA, in 2000 and lived in Santa Claus, GA, before moving to Bethany Assisted Living.  She was a member of the Auxilians of Meadows Regional Hospital, a charter member of The Oaks Baptist Church, The Oaks Adult Choir, and The Oaks Adult Sunday School Class.  She loved the color blue, Mexican food, plants, reading, and knitting.

Mrs. Schaible is survived by a son, CW4(Ret) Daniel F. Schaible, Jr., US Army, and wife, Mardell of Decatur, TX, a daughter Christine “Chris” S. Rustin of Santa Claus, GA;  two grandsons, Daniel C. Rustin of Buck Head, GA and Jason D. Schaible and wife, Ashley of Southlake, TX; a great-granddaughter, Mary McKenzie Rustin of Statesboro and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Gertrude “Toots” Brittain Schaible will be at The Oaks Baptist Church, Lyons, GA on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Steve Ayers and Reverend Josh Hughes officiating.  Later, she will be buried with her husband, pending notification and arrangements with the Arlington National Cemetery at Washington, D.C.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

Pallbearers will be Dan Rustin, Jason Schaible, Bobby Westmoreland, Rustin Wright, Dan Schaible, and Frankie Faulk.
